Cheung Chuk Shan College alumni overseas link UPDATES

Update # 92. January 29, 2008

FROM BEIJING

The email from Lee Chin Kei [ F7 1981 ] brings back to me a lot of fond memories teaching Matriculation Biology at CCSC in the 1970s and 80s.

The class size was small, typically with less than 10 students. But all of them were bright and hardworking, as they were all aiming at getting into Medical School after the Matriculation Examination.

Our daily lessons were conducted in the Biology Laboratory on the Sixth Floor, where we gathered around one big table in the Lab. Somehow we looked more like in a meeting than doing chalk-and-board class instructions. In fact we seldom used chalk and board at all, as most of the teaching materials I had prepared for them were already on paper hand-outs. This, we found, was a very quick and efficient way in our race with time to cover as many syllabus topics as we could.

The small class size provided plenty of opportunities for the Bio Group members to interact with each other, especially when they had to use their "free periods" for practicing dissection techniques or studying Histology slides, and when going out to the field for Ecological Projects. So a strong cohesion is often a strikingly unique characteristic of the Sixth Form Biology Group, as compared to other subjects.

Dr. Lee Chin Kei (§Q¤d°ò) is an Epidemiology Specialist in World Health Organization (WHO) Beijing Office. I appreciate his writing to me when he first found my overseas website:

Hi Ching Sir

Greetings from Beijing.

I've just found your CCSC website accidentally. It's great.

I'm Lee Chin Kei (§Q¤d°ò) from CCSC [F5 1979, F7 1981]. I've migrated to Australia in the 1990s, but have been working at the Beijing Office of the World Health Organization since 2003.

Keep in touch.

Best Regards

Hi Felix

Yes, it has been nearly 30 years since we last met/talked. I still have vivid memory of the time I had been at CCSC and the Bio class.

For a quick update of myself, after I left CCSC:
  • In the 80s - studied in the medical school (CUHK), did a few years of clinical work in HK
  • In the 90s - migrated to Australia, then studied Public Health, and Applied Epidemiology
  • In the 2000s - Worked in a university and started a PhD that I never completed.
  • In 2003, I was involved in the WHO investigation of the SARS outbreaks (Hong Kong and Mainland China), and subsequently stayed in the China Office till now. My responsible areas are "Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response", particularly for those outbreak-prone diseases such as SARS, bird flu, etc.
I've attached a few recent photos here. While taking lots of photos regularly, I seldom have myself in the photos.

The horse-back picture was taken last year in Mongolia. This was the first time I did horse riding, and couldn't imagine how exhausting it could be (after 2 hours).

I haven't been in touch with my classmates in CCSC (and, to be honest, neither with those in the university and postgraduate schools). It's a pleasure to be able to learn news from CCSC teachers and graduates in your websites.

THANKS.

Best Regards
ck

It is amusing to hear Lee Chin Kei's comment on his own photo after he read this update, Here it is quoted below:

Hi Felix

The holiday for Chinese New Year has just started here. Hope that you have a happy Chinese New Year.

I've just browsed the CCSC website. You've done a very impressive job in providing interesting updates - particularly like your section about the Biology class decades ago......

It's nice to see my photo in your website. And I realize that I was always examining my camera when I was photographed by others! See another photo of me with the first bird flu case in China.

I've noticed Chan Sze Fun Stephen has sent you an email earlier. Do you still have his email address?

Thank you.

Dear Felix,

Thanks for your reply!

My academic life in CCSC was rather different from the others. I had studied in New Method College before and only joined CCSC in Form 4 and Form 5 (from 1984 to 1986). I was matriculated in HK Chinese Women’s Club College.

I am a Chartered Engineer. My career path is also rather atypical as I was not a science student at the beginning. I spent 12 years going from Ordinary Engineer Certificate to a Master's Degree in evenings. I am now working in ATAL, the engineering company responsible for the governmental project ‘E-Channel’.

Are you still keeping contacts with Mrs. Poon and Miss Ip? I believe they still remember me as I did not behave so well in their classes. ;-) The best performed student in my class was Li Shiu Ling. Nevertheless, Mrs. Poon impressed the whole class that she was a responsible teacher and actually her teaching is still in my mind! If they can rec my words, I will ask another classmate who also only joined CCSC in 84 to write also. His name is Tang Kwok Fu, another special student in my class.

How about Ms. Lam who taught Chinese and Chinese History?

Your asking me to send you some photos is great! But I don’t have many photos and just attached two here (maybe more in another round). The photos were taken when I was introducing an air-conditioning project to PCCW staffs.

Thanks and happy Chinese New Year!

Best Regards
Kwong Siu Ming

Both Ms Poon and Ms Lam (Mrs Ma) retired recently. Miss Ip left CCSC a number of years ago.   ---Felix

Addendum 2/8/08
This year's Chinese New Year Fair at Booth #137 proved to be another success. "The Cheesy Mice are selling quick for their creative, beautiful and multi-purpose design," comments Mr. Yuen. The pictures below depict the pretty cheesy-mice, the CCSC booth and students.

Further Addendum (3/11/2008)

When asked "How was business at the New Year Fair?", Mr Yuen writes:

The profit this year shot up to about 31% with the efforts of the students and Mrs. Shirley Tsang.

The Chief Executive of HKSAR, Mr. Donald Tsang, also visited our stall, and showed interest and sat on a Cheese Mouse. It was publicized in the media and we are famous now.

Congratulations to CCSC and all involved in this profitable venture.
