Update # 42. September 22, 2001

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA

Monterey, California

I had the great pleasure of meeting Miss Amy Poon again when she was here to visit her brother at San Jose this September.

Miss Poon had been teaching English and EPA at CCSC for 13 years, and was in charge of school discipline, when she left HK in 1991 and got married and lived in Boston, Massachusetts. A few years ago they came back again when her husband took up a post at a university in Hong Kong. Currently Miss Poon herself works as a part time teaching consultant at another university in HK, supervising and assessing the performance of student-teachers in their teaching practice. Before that, in her free time while in HK she had helped out at CCSC as substitute teacher when the existing teachers took long sick leave.

My attempt to arrange for some Bay Area alumni to meet Miss Poon didn't materialize as we could not return to San Jose on time after going out to see places like Monterey, Carmel and Gilroy. My apologies to those who had been waiting at the phone. The picture above was taken at the Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey, California. More pictures in Family Album Page 81.

CCSC SPORTS DAY

Bad weather hit the Sports Days again this year, and the first day of events (Heats) had to be cancelled. Events were compressed into one day, which were both for Heats and Finals. The venue was the same as last year, at Siu Sai Wan Sports Field.

We are grateful for the many candid shots that Mr C K Siu took on that day, which he sent to us for immediate update. A BIG THANKS to you, Mr Siu. SEE FAMILY ALBUM PAGE 82 AND PAGE 83.

RICHMOND / VANCOUVER

Very nice to hear from David Lew [ F5 1979 ] who lives in Richmond near Vancouver. We are so glad David has given us an update of his well-being after having left CCSC over 20 years ago.

Hi Ching Sir

Now I'm 40, I found my physical is not like before for a long time, therefore as a kind of habit, I always remind people to do exercise as to remind myself. I think as long as we are health and have a happy life, that would be fine. Who knows what may happen in our life.

I've been in Vancouver for 9 years and never back to HK. I went further study in counseling and psychotherapy when I just came. After I worked as a community worker few month then worked as Tour Guide in the Rockies for almost 5 years. Money is good but more rewarding is the places that I showed the travellers. The last year of being a Rockies Tour Guide, I did something that my tutor in Polytechnic admire, or I should say lots of professional photograhers' dream. You know what I did??? I took a 5X4 view camera and medium format camera and made a camping trip to the Rockies and Yellow Stone for a month. Even though I've been there many times, but it's different. I took over 400 shots in color and BW. Sound familiar? I want to experience what Ansel Adams did. May be next time I sent you some pictures that I took.

Anyway, now I worked as a Level 2 foster parents for the Ministry of Children and Family. As far as I know, there's only 2 asian foster parents in the province and I'm one of them. Actually, I'm the first to join the Ministry. I never thought that this can be a job make my living and so rewarding. Life is okey for me, in the summertime, I go camping, off road driving, canoeing and fishing. I should say life is good. No complaint, at least at this moment.

NAIROBI, KENYA

[ APPENDED 9/28/2001 ]

So exciting to get a post card from Cheng Sau Ting Aileer [ F5 1994 ], mailed direct from Nairobi, Kenya. Aileer had sent me another one before, but she gave it to an American tourist who brought it back to USA first before mailing it for her. Aileer did not trust the Kenyan Post Office owing to past experience of mail loss. Well, same here...... our US Mail service is not any better. Aileer's post card came 2 weeks late (She had emailed me and told me some other people already got her post card, but I still didn't have it, until after 2 weeks). Then I knew it had been wrongly delivered to another address, since the person who received it circled the street number in the address and asked the Postman to "Try Again" !!!

Aileer holds a Master's degree in Chemistry from Imperial College, London University, and is currently a volunteer Chemistry teacher in Kenya.
