The last time she had dinner in my home

Dear Felix,

You have captured a beautiful portrait of Marian for the Obituary.

I host a small dinner party for buddy CCSC colleagues every year, and the picture below was taken in the winter of 2007. I was too busy in 2008 and the next dinner was held in January 2009. But Marian failed to turn up this time because she was too weak to walk.

I am really touched that all those who have read your message and mine have clicked the link to listen to John Williams ' version of Concerto d'Aranjuez, as it took me well over half an hour to get the link open while I am writing this email.

Marian was an avid movie fan and I always made her tell me the stories of the films she had seen and I hadn't. Last Sunday night, the night before her sister Sylvia broke the sad news to me, I was watching "Man from La Mancha", a film she highly recommended. Marian was on my mind while I was watching that film. Probably she was there with me. Hence, the Spanish concerto was chosen specially for her. Thank you for joining me in this dedication.

Winnie

Yes, I couldn't believe Marian has left us already!

Scenes of us chatting in the staff room at CCSC keep coming back to my mind. I also remember we all went to Cheung Chau one weekend, thanks to the hospitality of Mr. Fung, and we had some very happy moments there. And we were all in our twenties then!!!

懷念我們的 Marian

星期一傳來噩耗,晚上寫下了:

我倆是真光姊妹,
但結緣於張祝珊,
三十六年時光,一瞬而逝,
對你的離去,雖然不捨,
但又為你終能脫離病困而釋懷。
Marian,

We went to the wake at 6:00 p.m. Marian's photo gave the feel of peace, joviality and serenity. By half-past six, the small room was filled with friends, students, former colleagues & relatives. Marian is certainly dearly loved and sorely missed by all. With her family's permission, I took a few pictures.

(Quite a number of old friends and past colleagues attended the wake. Among the past students we met in the wake were: Kitty Lee, Ling Yiu Keung 凌 耀 強 , Raymond Chung 鍾 奕 昌 , William Chan 陳 鎮 中 , Andy Ho 何 耀 明 .)

Dear Ching Sir:

I went to pay the last respect on Tuesday and chatted with her brother Edward on her whereabouts for the last 25 years. I missed a chance to meet her in Singapore. When Marian was teaching at NanYang University, Singapore during 1991 onward, I was actually teaching in a different institute only 15 minutes' drive alway. I could have met her over there if I had known!

I ran into her other students [ Year 1978 ] who were greatly influenced by her teaching. They are suggesting to set up with something like a student book prize etc to memorize her. I would try to do something with my classmates and hope to get something on going soon.

I also just received some bad news about Michael Law who I met recently in the 40th annual dinner. Mr. Law was my F4A [1975] form teacher while Marian was my form teacher in F5A [1976] !

Dear Mr. Ching:

I only came to know about Miss Wu’s death, the wake and the funeral service when all were over. I missed her very much as a student of hers when she first taught in CCSC in 1974 and as a colleague when she taught in City University. We were teaching in the same department. Besides, not too many know that I have five sisters and my two eldest sisters and my fifth sister had also been taught by Miss Wu. She will be dearly remembered in our hearts.

I’d like to pay my tribute to her by sharing with you the song: “Starry Starry Night” which was written in memory of Vincent Van Gogh, as a tribute by Don McLean, in the seventies. This is presented along with a power point slide show of Vincent’s painting. CLICK HERE

I am sending a photo of Miss Marian WU taken in December 1997, when she visited me at City University of Hong Kong. She was wearing such a radiant smile on her face!

DECEMBER 1997

I'd also like to write something about a memorable incident at CCSC:
One day, in an English lesson, I noticed that there was a foreigner entering the classroom with Miss Wu and was given a back seat in the classroom. I could guess that this was going to be a special lesson for her and for us. I was right. She did not use the text book but gave out a handout of an advertisement on COW & GATE milk powder. She asked the class the question saying that who we would think would be the most suitable person to sell this product. At that time, like most of the time when questions were asked, many dropped their heads to avoid eye-contact with the teacher. But I was different for I thought the answer was too obvious and I knew it. So, she called on me to answer the question. With all boldness, I said, "From my opinion, we should ask a doctor to do it." Then I was met with a comment from her. She said, " In your opinion, ..." I didn't remember the rest of what she said already but one thing I learned and it stuck with me was that I made a mistake in the use of the preposition. I felt so grateful to her for helping me learn this in such a gentle way. This to me is an inspiration and a demonstration of the art of teaching. Thank you, Miss WU.

Kitty
