Update # 102. March 9, 2009

PLUS: ADDENDA ON 3/25/2009, 5/20/2009, 5/26/2009

Hello All.... Perhaps it's a little late for Chinese New Year greetings. It is March already, and there has been quite a lapse since I wrote my last update.

Anyway, I hope all of you have been doing well in the first moon in the Year of the Ox. I also hope that the Lunar New Year is bestowing on us the Ox's exuberant physical strength, his energy and vigor, as well as as his resolute obstinance, even stubbornness. At this time we do need fine qualities like these.

For the New Year, I offer my most sincere greetings and very best wishes to you and yours. Kung Hei Fat Choy !!!

謹祝: 身體健康, 龍馬精神, 萬事勝意.

Subject: Hello from Portland, Oregon

Hi Mr. Ching,

It's been a while since I emailed you. How have you been? I hope you are doing well in the Bay Area.

Time does fly and it's the fourth month since I moved to Portland, Oregon. Work is challenging but slowly picking up, good sign. Here at Intel, I'm working in their core R & D site, where we develop all the processes and products, then deploy to all the factories in the world. Specifically, I'm a member in their Test Research & Development team for 22nm technology process development. The first product in this 22nm technology family will be launched tentatively at the end of 2011. Having a chance to work with world class experienced scientists, statisticians and engineers is great -- a very steep learning curve ahead of me but also a very exciting adventure. =P

Before I started my work in October 2008, I actually dropped by Hong Kong for 2 weeks and had a great time. There I held a small banquet for my CCSC pals to celebrate my getting out of school finally after 26 years! It was such a wonderful time for us to meet each other after so many years. Some of them, I haven't really contacted for more than a decade!!! I appreciate so much their time and effort to come and joined me that night. It was a good dining experience, at the same time, a very warm and memorable gathering. We all had a good time! Honestly, to me they are like my extended family. We took quite some pictures that night, here I attach one of the group dinner pics we captured.

In addition to the dinner, I had a very good time in Hong Kong. There I had some one-on-one gatherings with my old CCSC friends, in particular, Jenny Chen [F7 1998]. We went to the Peak for a nice walk in one of the evenings. I can't really recall when I was there the very last time. Jenny to me is like my immediate family member throughout all these years, she's now working in the legal sector. Weather was not too bad, at least visibility was fine. We were able to overlook the Kowloon side. And I am including a picture we took that day here as well.

Nice walk with Jenny Chen at the Peak

Another reason I picked that period of time to visit Hong Kong was for Mabel's wedding. Mabel Cheung [F7 1999] got married with Dhugal Tam in October 2008. Of coz, this became another significant factor for me to head back, so as to witness their wedding. They met each other while studying Medicine at CUHK and now are both medical doctors serving in public hospitals. We actually had a CCSC table in their banquet. Please refer to the picture we took at the banquet.

Last week, I got a message from another CCSC friend. She read my updates posted on your website, and so she decided to shoot me a message. Frankly speaking, I was overjoyed and very surprised when I got to see her message. It's been so many years since we last chatted. We had a very good time in high school and I would really like to keep in touch with her. Just would like to let you know, your effort to update this website is highly appreciated. =) Thank you so much, we will be talking over the phone soon.

Alright, it's getting late. I still have to work on the legal paperwork for my patent application tomorrow. Not very positive about being able to find a company to sponsor/fund the final patent fee under the present economy situation. Yet, will still try my best to do so and no matter what, I'm sure it will be a nice experience to go through this process again. =)

Next time when my mom come visit me, I will bring her to San Francisco. Hopefully I can meet you in person by then.

Here, I wish you a belated Happy Chinese New Year! Most of all, being Healthy, Happy and Wealthy in the Year of Ox!

Best Regards,

Charlotte

SEASON'S GREETINGS

I would like to acknowledge receipt, with heart-felt thanks, of Christmas, New Year, and Lunar New Year greetings sent by past students and former colleagues. Understandably it does take quite an effort to send out such tidings every year, as everyone has his/her own tight daily schedules at work or at school. It's real nice if one can make at least a once-only-in-the-year quick communication, just to tell your folks you have been doing OK in the past year.

Excuse me for not being able to post every one of the greeting emails on this page.

Ho Yiu Ming Andy [ F5 1975 ] sent us greetings and a Family Photo every year. He said,

Dear Mr. Ching and Family,
Kung Hei Fat Choy!
How are you and your family? My family and I are fine in HK.
祝身體健康, 心想事成!

Best Wishes from
Andy and Family

That's very nice indeed. Thank you, Andy. It's great to see the kids growing up.

Lam Ting Wah Terence [ F2 1988 ], who left the San Francisco Bay Area and went to New York a few years ago, wrote back to me and said:

"Dear Ching Sir,
新 年 快 樂 ! Happy Chinese New Year to you! Hope your 2009 is off to a great start!

I am doing well, and just returned to school last week to finish up my final semester at Cornell University. Do look me up if you are ever in the New York City area next, and we'll definitely catch up. In the meantime, I will continue to rely on your CCSC alumni overseas site to keep myself current on the latest news.

Finally, I wish you the best in the Year of the Ox!

-Terence

Thank you, Terence, for your greetings, and for the updates.

Dear Mr. Ching,

How are you? I am a graduate of CCSC in 1982 (F.5 Arts stream). By random, I found your website: Cheung Chuk Shan College alumni overseas link. This website surprised me very much. Another surprising thing to me is that: I recognised you are the one who taught me biology in F.1 and F.3. The world is so small!!!

Below are my contact details. I heard that CCSC is holding their 40th Anniversary Dinner in Feb. 7 this year. I got this info by luck when I brought my son to the flower market in Victoria Park this Wednesday night. CCSC's students have set up a booth there and gave me a piece of circular. Will you come to this function?

Happy Lunar New Year!

Warmest regards,
Lawrence Wong

Hi Lawrence, it's surely a small world. Thanks a lot for writing back. The 40th Anniversary Dinner is now on March 20. If the admission charges are paid before Feb 7, there will be a "discount". I hope you will attend the dinner. It will be held on Metropolitan Restaurant. Please see the dinner information above from Kalvin in this Update #102. It will too far for me to come this time, as I live in San Francisco. Very nice indeed to hear from you, and Keep in touch. --Felix

Dear Mr. Ching,

I stumbled across the CCSC website yesterday. I have heard from friends before that there is an alumni association in Hong Kong for the school. Can you give me some information of how to join. It will be good to join dinner if I am in Hong Kong to catch up with old friends. By the way, I studied F1 to F5 1973 to 1978 in Arts class, major in Chinese literature and English literature. Mrs Yuen looks very familiar, can you remind me what subjects does she used to teach.

Kind regards,

Monita Chow
Sydney, Australia

Very nice to hear from you, Monita. Please see information about the 40th Anniversary and try to attend the Anniversary Dinner. Mrs Yuen taught Geography and at the same time she was the Vice Principal until around 1990 when she migrated to Perth, Australia. Please drop by this area often, and keep in touch.

BACK HOME TO HONG KONG & CCSC

Before closing, here is a photo of some former CCSC teachers at their private hot-pot dinner party on February 20, 2009. From left, Miss Fok, Mrs. Y. Fung (a.k.a. Miss Yeung) (English teacher in the mid 1970s), Ms. W. Wong, Mr. Fung, Mr. Alan L. Chan (Physics & Maths teacher, mid-70s), and Mr. and Mrs. Wat. Thanks to Mr. Wat for providing the photo.

Another picture, taken at a somewhat earlier date, was sent by courtesy of Miss W. Wong. It depicts her Annual Dinner she hosts every year at her house, usually with just a few guests. Ms. Wong writes:

COSY TOGETHERNESS
My Annual Dinner was held last Friday, 9th January. My six guests included Mr. & Mrs. Fung, Miss Fok, Mrs.Josephine Ng (a.k.a. Miss Lee Yuk Ling), Mr.Alan Chan, and William Chan Chun Chung, a former student of CCSC and now an accountant (also Honorary Accountant of CCSC Alumni) and a registered Chinese physician (陳鎮中註冊中醫師).

Ms.Marian Wu could not make it this year because of poor health. We do miss her and pray for her speedy recovery. I do hope she will be in the photo again at my next dinner party.

Mr. Fung is back to his old self again. His appetite returns and he laughs a lot these days. It's great to find my old friend back to himself again. Keep it up, Joe Boy!!!

[ ADDENDUM: MARCH 25, 2009 ]

It was great pleasure for me and my family, on our trip to Portland, Oregon, to meet with Charlotte Kwong [ F7 1999 ] and had dinner together on March 22, 2009. Thanks to Charlotte for finding the best Chinese restaurant in Portland area and making prior reservations. The dinner was just delicious, and all of us enjoyed immensely the food and casual talk. Thank you, Charlotte, and hope to meet you again some time.

FROM NEW YORK TO SAN FRANCISCO

I was absolutely thrilled to hear that Fu Ching Mui Phoebe [ F4 1989 ] was coming in to San Francisco.

Phoebe left CCSC in 1989 after F4 and emigrated to New York area with her family. She subsequently went to Massachusetts Institute of Technology and finished her degree in Chemical Engineering. She said she began to love Chemistry as early as her CCSC days. (She was one of my favorite students when I taught Chemistry at CCSC... so I know. :-) She got into Graduate School later, and even worked on other disciplines, including a graduate degree in Theology!

For this trip she is spending a few days in San Francisco area for a short vacation, and to meet with some friends. Surprisingly, this is Phoebe's very first time to San Francisco; even though she has been in U.S.A. for nearly 20 years. Most of the time she remained an old faithful New Yorker, with the exception of the few years of College in Boston.

Phoebe said her short stay in the Bay Area was memorable and exceedingly enjoyable. Apart from the usual tourist attraction areas that she went to, such as Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39 (and the noisy Sea Lions), the Crookedest Street in the World (Lombard Street), Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, etc etc, she was delighted to be able to visit the campuses of two celebrated universities on the West Coast, namely, Stanford University, and University of California, Berkeley. She said, some of her close friends are Stanford and Berkeley graduates, so now she can talk more to them about their universities....
